The Queue Management Glossary

Plain-language definitions for the key terms in virtual queue systems, queue management and customer flow — each linking to a deeper guide.

Virtual queue

A queue customers join remotely — by scanning a QR code or opening a link — and wait in without standing in a physical line. They see their live position and are notified when it is their turn.

Queue management

The set of processes and tools used to organise how customers wait, the order they are served in, and how staff call them forward — increasingly done with software rather than physical lines.

Digital waiting list

A software-based waiting list that replaces paper. Customers join online and receive updates, while staff manage the list from a dashboard — no manual writing or shouting.

QR queue

A queue customers join by scanning a QR code. The code opens a browser-based join page, issues a ticket and live position, and the customer is notified when a space opens — no app required.

Walkaway rate

The share of customers who leave a queue before being served. A high walkaway rate signals poor wait experience and lost revenue; digital queues cut it by keeping customers informed and off-site.

Wait time

How long a customer waits before being served. Queue tools show live wait time to customers and track average wait time for staff to spot peaks and optimise staffing.

Queue position

A customer's live place in the queue, recalculated automatically as others are served or leave. Showing live position reduces perceived wait and keeps customers engaged.

Customer flow

The end-to-end journey customers take through your business — joining, waiting, being served and leaving. Smooth customer flow reduces bottlenecks and improves satisfaction.

Table turnover

How quickly a restaurant turns over a table for the next party. Virtual queues and live updates keep the next party ready, so tables sit empty for less time between sittings.

Appointment queue

A queue based on pre-booked time slots. Appointment queues offer predictability but are vulnerable to no-shows; many businesses pair them with a virtual waiting list for walk-ins.

Service queue

A queue for a specific service counter or workstation, common in retail, pharmacies and government offices. Software lets you run several service queues from one dashboard.

Queue analytics

Data on wait times, throughput, peak hours and no-shows, used to optimise staffing and the customer experience. Queue management software surfaces these without manual tracking.
